I’m currently embroiled in lots of research for a project. It involves going back through archives of Cycling Weekly magazine. It’s a fairly straightforward way to lose track of time and space, but is certainly enjoyable. I find it hard not to get sidetracked by the trade adverts though…
Somewhere in my loft I have a stack of 50’s cycling weeklys you can have will bring them to the forthcoming hill climbs rollapaluza bag boy in person.
Love these ads.
Kind of losely related to this and possibly of interest – a colleagee at work just came over with a cracking old photo of her great grandfather, Joe Scapens, perched atop his steed and taken at Bristol Memorial Ground in 1906. She claims he was English Grasstrack Champion. Not sure in what direction your research is going but can provide further info if interested.
it’s not quite going in that direction, but the image sounds amazing. which club did he ride for?
there are quite few grass track images in the archive.
