Cycle Touring

Steve DB just got back from a week’s in Ireland. He looked refreshed and rejuvenated from the long days in the saddle and the unconfined serendipity of touring by bicycle. A part of me wants to give up racing and spend the time doing expeditions instead.

Here’s a lovely short film from Steffan in Germany. Jack Thurston summed it up neatly:”if Werner Herzog went cycle-touring”.

When Sylvie was born I bought a full on touring bike. Exactly at the time when I wouldn’t be able to use it properly for a few years. Looking back I think it was a subconscious reaction to my situation. Unable to get out on rides anything over an hour or two. I was daydreaming and didn’t realise it. I sold if a few months later when I realised it’d be a few years before it got proper use and it wasn’t the best bike for using around town.
